The exhibit hosts some of the greatest figures of Italian design through a selection of their most representative objects taken from the La Triennale di Milano’s Permanent Collection, picked by Silvana Annicchiarico and staged by AR.CH.IT Architetti Associati.

From Bruno Munari to Ettore Sottsass, from Achille Castiglioni to Gaetano Pesce, the exhibit shows the richness and strength of Italian design, focussing especially on the creativity of those designers that reinvented the different design types, tested innovative technologies and devised new relationships between format and function, always with the idea of making world more comfortable and introducing beauty in everyday life.

Since the selection had to be as representative as possible, it has been necessary to introduce the work of some designers that nobody would object to define masters. Masters, indeed, not because they founded schools or trained pupils, but because all of them (each in his/her own way) had devised a model or established codes which others then adopted and imitated, always integrating themselves with other subjects in this sector, (the companies, the customers, the public) in a continuing and lively synergy. The objects introduced and showed in the exhibit are, for this reasons, symbols and paradigms not only of each designer’s work and method, but indeed of the social and time context they had “lived” in. In other words, they are important not only for their function but also, and even more so, for the questions they generate, the answers they offer and the new way they invite us to build new relationships with the things. The sheer “material” nature of each introduces and solves complex theoretical and formal issues, tests new materials and hints at previously unseen relationships between project and consumption. Although they all are the works of different masters, all these objects actually speak to each other: they continually exchange information and secrets, compare analogies and solutions and test themselves in the continuous comparison with all that looks more alike to them and, on the other hand, with the things that most differ from them. All of this is due to the fact that design is to be regarded, both for its history and the methods it uses, as a strongly dialogical art, a fact that makes it also unavoidably interobjective.

About Hong Kong Design Centre

The Hong Kong Design Centre is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping local designers and businesses to realise their full potential. Our mission is to use design and innovation to drive value creation and improve the well-being of society. Our vision is to establish Hong Kong as a centre of design excellence in Asia.

The Hong Kong Design Centre was established in 2001 by the Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations, the founding members of which are Hong Kong Designers Association, Interior Design Association Hong Kong, Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association, and the Chartered Society of Designers. Our principal financial supporter is the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government.

We organize year-round seminars, workshops and conferences, on the one hand, to promote awareness of the value of design and use of design in the business / industry communities and, on the other hand, upgrade the business and design expertise of design professionals and students. We promote design excellence and awareness by organizing prestigious design award schemes and exhibitions. Through joint efforts with Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, we contribute to building InnoCentre’s facilities for design tenants and incubating design start-ups. We also provide professional input to the admission of tenants and incubatees to the InnoCentre and coaching of the latter.
